Stack Six

Stack 6.jpgOne of my newly re-discovered favorites, Stack 6 is a variation on the classic Object Retrieval and close cousin to the Bull Ring. It can easily be adapted to any group size, skill level, and most importantly, space. In fact, I was introduced to the idea by a classroom teacher using the activity on table tops. The variations and applications are endless and best of all, putting it together is easy and inexpensive.

Description:
Using the lifting contraption (which is nothing more than several strings attached to a rubber band) a group of ten participants attempts to stack six plastic cups in a pyramid formation. Each participant controls their own individual hand line and working together they can expand or contract the rubber band to capture or release the cup. The key to success will be in effective communication and steady in sync movements.

Group Size: 10 and Up
Time: 20-30 mins.

Props: For each set-up you'll need about 50' of thin p-cord, a heavy duty rubber band, and six plastic cups.

Set-up:
IMG_20101116_112915_edit0.jpgBegin by dividing the p-cord into 10' lengths. Attach each length to the rubber band using a girth hitch. This should provide 2, 5' p-cord hand lines for operating the lifting contraption. Once completely assembled there should be a total of 10 hand lines. Adding additional hand lines will accommodate larger groups however, larger groups can be challenging.

Girth.jpg Goal: Using the provided lifting contraption, un-stack six cups and assemble them into a pyramid.

Rules:
1. Each participant is given one hand line to assist in the operation of the lifting contraption.
2. Participants may only hold the last 4" of the hand line.
3. Participants are not allowed to touch the cups unless resetting the stack.
4. The cups are stacked at the start.
5. If a cup is tipped over the group may attempt to right the cup using the lifting contraption.
6. A group may restart at any time by restacking the cups; this may be done by hand.

Variations:
Think progression as stacking 6 can be challenging. Start with three cups and make a smaller pyramid working your way towards bigger challenges.

Create lifting contraptions with 3-4 hand lines and allow the group to work in smaller teams. Several smaller teams can work on one big pyramid.

Fill one cup with Ping Pong balls and challenge the group to transfer the balls to another cup.
