Be the Example: The Power of Our Actions to Inspire Others

Written By: Jim Grout

Last week I watched the Vermont gubernatorial debate between our existing Governor, Phil Scott, and Amanda Janoo, his challenger. The setting was somewhat surreal in this day and age. Both sat at a round table, joined by the moderator from Vermont PBS. Their time together was more like a conversation than a debate. It was rich in civility and respect for one another. Challenging issues were raised and complex questions were asked but the candidates responses were always a model of what it means to listen and share one’s ideas and still feel valued despite differences of opinions or approaches.

If ever there was an example of “leading by example,” this was it and for all the world to see. We do indeed have it in us as a people to act this way. I came away believing either candidate would serve the State of Vermont well and wished I could vote for both of them. As the debate drew to a close, both of them reached across the table to shake hands and wish one another well.

The power of meaningful and respectful dialogue is far reaching and always inspiring.
