What Is Adventure Education?

Adventure education (another term used often is experiential education) is based on the concept that people learn effectively when they:

  • are interested in what they are learning
  • are actively participating in their learning
  • feel a sense of control over what they are learning
  • reflect on the experience afterward, to make connections to other experiences, learning and life situations.

I did it!

In adventure education the teacher/facilitator challenges a group to achieve a goal, but does not explain how to successfully complete the challenge. Participants must work together, communicate and learn from each other to be successful.

Positive change often occurs when individuals and groups face intense problem-solving or safe risk-taking situations. Adventure based methods have been very successful in meeting both educational and personal goals.

Have you ever tried something that you thought you weren't capable of doing, or solved a problem that initially intimidated you? Remember how this success felt empowering and how you learned something about yourself, or others? Adventure education and experiences that take place on a challenge course can create that process and outcome in a controlled and safe way.

A challenge course--or ropes course--is a group of activities, puzzles and challenges constructed of wood, cables and hardware. Some elements are close to the ground, and others are up high, necessitating climbing and safety equipment: ropes, harness, helmets, etc.

In challenge course situations the participants are taken out of their standard frame of reference and asked to participate in unusual, challenging, fun, but sometimes intimidating activities.

Groups are assigned the challenge but not given any explanation in how to achieve a successful outcome. Success is dependent on interaction, healthy communication, positive group behavior and problem solving skills. If these traits don't exist within the group then a challenge course experience can help to quickly and successfully develop them.

Participants learn to recognize the inner resources, strengths and positive qualities within themselves and amongst their team mates. Reflecting on the experience afterward allows them to learn more about both their personal and the group's behavior, and relate it back to their normal routine to create positive change and ongoing group success.
